What happens when they run out hurricane names?

The Atlantic hurricane season has been very active with multiple landfalling hurricanes. With tropical storm Vicky forming a couple of days ago it just leaves Wilfred left this season.

21 out of the 26 letters of the Alphabet are used – We are currently at 20.

Once this list becomes exhausted the Greek alphabet is used.

This has only happened once before in the 2005 hurricane season.

6 letters of the Greek alphabet were used in 2005.

This is the 2020 stats so far from Wikipedia

I expect the 2020 season to see quite a few more named storms and get a fair way into the Greek alphabet. Conditions are extremely favourable.

Please refer to the National Hurricane Centre website for the very latest.
