Hello and welcome to a look back at our weather in October 2020 – We cover the Western Isles and the rest of the UK at the end of the blog.

It was the dullest October at Stornoway Airport since October 2006. October 2020 had 55.4 hours of sunshine. Whilst October 2006 had 48 hours of sunshine.
It was the 3rd Dullest month of the year behind January and February.
October 2020 had 211.4mm of rainfall. It was the wettest month of the year. It was the wettest October since 1996 which had 211.6 mm of rainfall.
It was a very unsettled month for the most part with a severe gale to end. High pressure did move in during the middle of the month but it was mostly overcast and plenty of rainfall .
Storm Aidan was the first named storm of the season and on the final day of October brought winds in excess of 75 mph across the Western Isles.

Creed Bridge – 255 mm of rain in October. October 2019 had 154 mm of rainfall. It was the Wettest month of the year so far.
Laxdale (Harris) – 258.2 mm of rain in October. September 2019 had 244.6 mm of rainfall. It was the second wettest month of the year behind January
Loch Tormasad – ** went offline during the end of the month **
Mill Croft – 253 mm of rain in October. September 2019 had 177.8 mm of rainfall. It was the wettest month of the year so far.

Harris Quidnish was the wettest place in the UK on the 20th October with 51.2 mm of rainfall.
There were 5 flood alerts issued during October

We had two weather warnings during the month of October a rainfall warning in the middle of the month and one wind warning at the end of the month.
The total number of weather warnings to date for the year for the Western Isles stands at 22.

It was the 5th Wettest October since 1862 in the UK according to the Met Office blog.
October 3rd also had the Wettest day ever on record across the entire UK –
on the 3rd October to make it the wettest day on record for UK-averaged rainfall (31.7 mm, beating the previous wettest day of 29.9 mm on 25th August 1986).https://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/
