A full week ahead forecast to follow have a great evening.
Welcome to our long range forecast for the Western Isles. This is our twice weekly update covering up to two ahead. We look at trends and patterns. Usually posted on a Thursday and Sunday.
Please note there is not a lot of accuracy for this kind of time frame. Anything beyond 4/5 days out becomes really difficult and subject to change so we will be looking at trends. Mainly take with a large vat of salt. We will be using the main two computer models for this. The ECMWF ( European Centre for medium range weather forecasts) which is based in Reading and the GFS (Global forecasting system) which is the American based global model.
This comes from the GFS 06z run and ECMWF 00Z run. I will refer to EC to save on typing.
EC – Thursday 2nd December to Tuesday 7th December
So the EC is showing for next Thursday that a showery airflow across the UK for us in the Western Isles we will see squally wintry showers these heavy at times. into the evening a band of rain will move across the island bringing rain, sleet and snow with increasing winds. Into Friday and Saturday and a similar pattern of rain and squally wintry showers along with brisk winds. Some longer spells of rain are possible for a time Friday evening. Sunday high pressure builds across the UK and the showers ease across the Western Isles. but a band of rain will move across the islands later in the day. On to the Monday and another showery day but a deep area of low pressure forms near Ireland and pushes heavy rain and strong winds across the Western Isles. The low pressure deepens with strong winds and heavy rain during Tuesday.
GFS – Thursday 2nd December to Saturday 11th December
So the GFS is showing a cold airflow across the UK with wintry showers moving across the islands on Thursday. As we move into the Friday various areas of low pressure will move across the Western Isles bringing rain and wintry showers. For the Saturday a day of sunshine and showers these again wintry but fairly light winds. Into Sunday and high pressure builds in allowing for a fine and dry day with sunshine and cloud and light winds. For Monday and Tuesday, high pressure builds across the north of the UK with fine and dry sunny weather. For the final 4 days of the time period, we are going to see further areas of low pressure nothing too deep bringing rain and wintry showers.
Thanks for reading any feedback is welcome. Featured photo from Allan Keyte

I know its annoying that the lines are closed, but please never underestimate the sheer power of nature. This is just one smallish forest that was blown over last night with some of the trees actually snapped in half. @NetworkRailSCOT@ScotRail@nrairopspic.twitter.com/AkHgeYcO1G
Still thousands of people without power as SSE work hard to restore power.
We remain in #RedAlert for our north of Scotland area following the impact of #StormArwen.
Progress has been made assessing the damage and carrying out repairs, with power restored to 55,000 customers. 60,000 customers currently remain off supply. https://t.co/2gzUFlycMWpic.twitter.com/qQ43GNg9Q0

Good evening Western Isles on this Thursday evening we have the first blog on Storm Arwen which became the first named storm of the 2021/22 season when it was named by the Met Office earlier today. In this blog post, we take a look at all the warnings that have been issued so far and the impacts for us in the Western Isles.
#StormArwen has been named and is forecast to bring a period of very strong winds and cold weather to the UK from Friday into Saturday
Disruption to travel and infrastructure is likely over the coming days with warnings in force ⚠️
We are going to see winds increasing during the day on Friday with the peak in the morning and lasting into the evening. This will be accompanied by rain and showers which will be wintry at times. Winds gusting 50 to 60 mph widely. With some coastal locations gusting 65 to 70 mph. The track of the low means the very worst of the winds will miss us but we are still likely to see a band of strong winds running down the minch. I will go into greater depth and detail this evening with my Friday forecast.
Met Office warnings
The first warning is an Amber warning for Orkney and the East Coast of the UK.
⚠️⚠️ AMBER weather warning issued ⚠️⚠️#StormArwen will bring very strong winds across eastern Scotland and northeast England
The two warnings that impact us in the Western Isles are the first is a yellow weather warning for wind and comes into force at 09:00 Friday and expires at 23:59 Friday evening covering the main impacts for us in the Western Isles.
The second warning is from 00:00 Saturday morning until 18:00 Saturday evening and is a yellow wind warning.
⚠️Yellow weather warning UPDATED ⚠️#StormArwen will continue to bring strong #winds across much of the UK
As #StormArwen approaches the UK it will pull some much colder air along with it
This combined with a strong northerly wind means that it won't feel much above freezing for many of us over the coming days 📉🥶 pic.twitter.com/y6OlmZiAqk
With high winds forecast across the north of Scotland and central southern England from Friday afternoon and into Saturday evening, we are prepared for any impact this may cause to our networks.
